Day 1 :
Arrival / pick up and transfer to Akagera National Park
You will be received at Kigali International Airport or any other agreed point, then transfer to Akagera national park. The journey takes 2-3 hours, rewarding with the countryside beauty of rolling hills and a relaxed nature of the day unlike the busy city. Arrive and check in at the accommodation facility for your first night of the 5 Day safari.
Take part in the morning game drive where you have a chance to spot different wild animals including the Big Five (rhinos, elephants, buffalos, lions and leopards), Maasai giraffes, Zebras, warthogs and many more. This game drive will last for about 4 hours and it will create everlasting memories while touring the savannahs. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on Lake Ihema and this will grant you an opportunity to see lots of hippos, crocodiles and sevral water birds. It’s believed that this lake has the highest concentration of crocodiles in Africa.
As you leave Akagera to the home of mountain gorillas – Volcanoes National Park, you will have a short game drive. Virunga National Park is also home to Dian Fossey’s graveyard, a female primate researcher who is still remembered for her work in saving mountain gorillas in the Virunga Massif. The drive will take about 3-4 hours depending on the speed. Arrive and check in at the booked accommodation .
Head to the park offices in Kiningi for briefing; this includes gorilla trekking rules, checking the requirements for trekking and thereafter assignment of a gorilla family to track. Penetrate the forest to start the search and the overall adventure can take 3 to 5 hours depending on how far the mountain gorillas have moved. An hour will be allocated to observe the gorillas after spotting them. More that you may encounter while on this gorilla trail are birds, other primates, and vast flora. After lunch, you will trek to visit the nearby Ibyiwachu Cultural Village where you will learn a lot about the Rwandan culture. Make your experience more entertaining by participating in the locals’ traditional music and dances.
Head back to Kigali after a leisurely breakfast. You will be dropped at the airport to mark the end of 5 Days Volcanoes & Akagera National Park tour.
