Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary , overseen by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, stands as a vital conservation area in northwestern Uganda, specifically in Nakasongola District. Nestled along the Kampala-Gulu highway, it occupies a strategic position on the route to Murchison Falls National Park, positioned about 180km or a 3-hour drive from Uganda’s capital city, Kampala. This sanctuary serves as an integral part of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, offering a haven for the endangered Rhinoceros.

Originally established in response to the tragic decline of Rhinos due to rampant poaching during Uganda’s turbulent history, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was founded in 2005 by the joint efforts of the Rhino Fund Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority. With a dedication to restoring the Rhino population, the sanctuary became home to 6 Rhinos initially, a number that has impressively burgeoned to 19 Rhinos today.

Rhino Tracking

The primary activity at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the captivating Rhino tracking experience. Led by experienced ranger guides, visitors embark on foot to witness these magnificent creatures up close, fostering an intimate interaction with Rhinos in their natural habitat. The sanctuary’s offerings extend beyond Rhino tracking, presenting a rich tapestry of diverse experiences. Bird enthusiasts can revel in the sanctuary’s array of over 350 bird species, including the esteemed Shoebill Stork, spotted during guided nature walks or serene boat cruises along designated birdwatching spots.

Nature Walks

Nature walks within the sanctuary unveil an abundance of wildlife, allowing encounters with various species such as bushbucks, duikers, hartebeests, and an assortment of reptiles and birds, culminating in a comprehensive safari experience. Accommodation options at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary include the Amuka Lodge, nestled within the sanctuary’s expanse, offering tented cottages, a swimming pool for relaxation, a well-stocked bar, and a restaurant serving an array of local and international cuisines.

Whether as a stopover on the way to Murchison Falls National Park or a standalone safari destination, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary promises a holistic adventure, catering to the interests of diverse visitors and providing a safe and captivating environment to witness the incredible journey of Rhino conservation.
